Email behavior on LG (Verizon) vs. ZTE (AT&T)

AC Question

I have a Verizon LG Optimus Zone 2 running Android Ver 4.4.2 and an AT&T ZTE ZMAX2 running Android 5.2. I'm using currently both phones as tablets - neither has been registered/configured to work as a cell phone. My email is configured on both as pop3. The LG default email app works as I expected - when I hit "Refresh" any new emails download without deleting previously downloaded emails that have been deleted on my provider's server. However, the ZTE default email app doesn't seem to have a "refresh" capability but only a "sync" function which of course will delete any previously downloaded emails which are no longer on my provider's server. Can anyone explain why these two devices operate so differently and if possible, how I can get the ZTE to perform like the LG regarding email? Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to Android Central! I don't have a direct answer for you, but I'm curious--does your email provider have an IMAP server as well? This wouldn't be an issue at all if you were on IMAP. If you're using Verizon Yahoo mail, though, you're limited to POP3 only.
