I am looking at purchasing a new Galaxy S7 Edge. If the phone is unlocked, does that ensure that it is not stolen or that there is no contract tied to it? I want to ensure that I am not buying a phone that can later be render useless.

An unlocked phone is one not tied to a particular carrier. In other words, it's not SIM-locked....you can use a SIM from any carrier in it, radio technology permitting.
Perhaps also you are thinking of other types of locking....screen locks and other security measures?
