Can send emails OK; cannot receive emails

[AC Question]

This phone was passed on to me by my wife. I have successfully changed the email address but cannot change the user name. I think this might be preventing me from receiving emails. Any ideas?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Did you do a full factory reset, then set the phone up using your own Google account? That's always the best thing to do when taking over someone else's phone.
