my screen wont light up it's black i can hear the buttons make nosie but i cant see anything!!

i bought it from a friend who reported it stolen but was told that if i take it to another carrier other than Verizon i could get it turned back on.. but i only want to use it for wifi here at home

so you bought it from a friend, who reported it stolen? so I'm guessing it's not stolen and you're breaking the law?
