How can I get my earbuds to work on my Samsung cell phone?

When I plug my earbuds into my Samsung Note 3 they do not work. I've gone to Settings to see if there's something in there that I should do and I am at a loss.

Troubleshoot. Do the good ear buds work on other devices? Do other ear buds work on the note? If not, look in settings to make sure volumes are up... You may have muted the device accidentally. Does the media you're playing have audio (some YouTube vids have no sound). Are the buds plugged in firmly. Does the speaker work on the note? Good luck!
