Why will my S6 not allow me to swipe the screen to open it to the other functions?

I've had the phone less than a month and it worked well until 1 week ago when the "Swipe screen to unlock" starting "freezing up" & will not allow me to access the other functions. I continue to get texts, emails, phone calls, notifications, but I can't open to get to them. I can't even turn the phone off or re-boot.

Press and hold Power and Volume Down for half a minute or so, to simulate a battery pull.
