Removing PIN to decrypt device on startup

[AC Question]

I see that on the newer Android versions there is an option to remove the PIN requirement to decrypt a device and only enter the PIN to unlock the screen when encryption is in place (thereby allowing remote connection via an MDM tool). Does anyone know if this is possible for older encrypted Android devices?
