Individualized Contact Text Tone Issue

[AC Question]

I have a Samsung S5 I got two days ago. I've gone to my contacts and changed the message tone for a few of them so it's personalized. I've also done this for their ringtones and it works fine. However, no matter how many times I change the notification tone for a specific contact when they message me it is always the default notification sound. I see that the contact's tone is saved as being the notification tone I set it to, yet that notification is not the one that sounds off when I receive a message. Is my phone just broken or is there another hoop I need to jump through to change my contacts notification sounds?

Hi, what apps are the notifications coming into? for example, are they the stock messaging app or whatsapp etc?
