Keep getting text message tone, but nothing showing up!

Galaxy S5, My husband keeps getting text message tone on his phone, but when he looks there is no text message or notifications of anything else showing. This just started last night late. It does it several times then there is a pause of about doing it for about 30 mins. Anyone know what can be causing this issue? Can anyone help us out??? Thanks!

Hi, could it be emails? is the phone recently set up or has he had it for a while? what if you were to change the notification tones on your message apps and emails etc - does it play the newly changed one or the old one?
