My Jitterbug Smart has apps I want to remove. Is there an easy way to do this? Do I have to root it? Is that even possible?

That all depends on what app and who installed it.
If the app came preloaded on the phone by the carrier (known as bloatware), then the only way to remove it is to first root the phone.
If you installed the app, you can easily uninstall it.
