how do I change the bright white background?

Most of the Android screens on my Note III (which I just received as an insurance replacement from Sprint) are glaring bright white.

How can I change the background color generally throughout Android on this phone?

I'm NOT talking about the Home Screen background; I'm talking about the background color used by default in Android itself (e.g. all the various settings screens) and in applications.

Even a slightly gray background would be better than SCREAMING GLARING WHITE.

I tried to look for apps but they all seem to be about photo backgrounds or Home Screen backgrounds; maybe there's an app background changer lost among the dozens / hundreds of those apps?

Welcome to the forums. Most of those are in an app basis. The app itself is coded for a white background. Some custom ROMs can enable a dark theme, but you would be required to root, and flash a custom recovery to your device.

You mean like in settings? Did your phone also receive the theme store with the update? Use a black theme.
