I downloaded some mp3 files onto my android phone and the files appeared in my song library on Google Play Music, even though I don't want them to. The box for auto-download is already unchecked and if I press delete in the library it deletes them from the device files too.

Welcome to Android Central! You can put those mp3 files in their own directory, than create a blank text file called ".nomedia" (without the quotes). This instructs the system to ignore that directory when looking for music files to add to the music database.
