I can't access the backround apps on my s4 mini

I home button don' t to close out of my backround apps my phone sends me a message that says " unfortunately the Process com.android.Sysemui has stopped working" then I am foreced to hit ok and the home screen backround turns black and I have to retype my pass code. I have tried turning off my phone a lot and I have even took my battery and Sim out but nothing has worked I really don't want to have to reset my phone

I have exactly the same problem on my S4 mini. Only started happening in the last few days. I've tried uninstalling recently installed apps, clearing cache from the boot menu, and forcing all sorts of apps and services to stop, but nothing makes a difference.
Out of interest, I just tried this on my wife's phone (also an S4 mini, but she never fiddles with it, so nothing has been changed for months...). Same result...yet I know it was also working last week.
I am not aware of any recent software update for this phone that would have any effect.
Did you find a fix? If so, please share...

This seems to be a fix for me. Obviously some recent update to the Google search app that causes the problem on many different (older) devices https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidQuestions/comments/5pjjqm/solved_issue_unfortunately_the_process/
