Read Receipts Suddenly Stopped Working - Advanced Messaging

My boyfriend and I have the S7 and the S7 Edge. We enabled "Advanced Messaging" and were able to see when the other was typing or had read text messages. The day before I left the country for a week it suddenly stopped. I assumed he turned it off and vice versa, but come to find out neither of us had; it simply stopped working. I went through both of our settings and deleted all outside messaging apps (WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger,...) to no avail. Both of our phones are up to date. Does anyone have any suggestions? I can't seem to find any answers.

Chance that by being out of country affects receipts?

I'd use what you like, WhatsApp or Textra etc
