Diffrences between S5 overheating or just getting hot?

My phone gets hot every time I use it, just want to see the differences between an overheating phone and a phone that just gets hot.

I think it just requires a commonsense judgement by the user. Some heat with heavy use of a device is normal, but excessive heat may be caused by a fault, such as a bad battery or bad SD card.
