My computer recognizes the phone is plugged in, and shows xt1254 on my computer screen. I click on it and says empty, because I cannot unlock the phone. I'm not sure if USB debugging was on. I have hundreds of pictures from overseas from my deployment. I could not back my phone up because I was obviously out of the country with no phone service. How can I go about this? These photos are extremely important to me and I'd hate to lose them for good. Due to this reason, I've now gotten an iPhone. I've had wayyy too many problems like this with androids.

Welcome to Android Central! See if this method works: A quick guide to accessing a locked phone with a cracked screen

There may also be 3rd party recovery software you can use, but I don't have any direct experience with that.

BTW, if the same thing happened on an iPhone, you'd probably run into the same issue, unless you had been backing up the photos regularly to your computer using iTunes.
