How can i get my previous sd card to work, and retrieve what's saved on it to my current phone?

My previous phone had my photos and contacts stored on its sd card. Can I somehow retrieve that information into my new phone? I've already physically installed it in my new phone, but it says it has to be formated. Can you help me please?

Do not format it or you will wipe the data on it. If your phone can't see it, put it in a pc, or an sd card reader.. Unless you encrypted the card, the info will be on it.

If the phone is asking to format the card, it's possible it was encrypted by the old phone. If you still have the old phone and it has not been factory reset you have a chance to get that data back but you need another place to store it temporarily.
