My acer tablet is running Android 4.1 help

I would like to update the tablet to a newer android OS but it's only a WiFi tablet it isn't hooked to a network..so what can I do?

It's not really being connected to a cellular network that matters. What matters is if Acer has decided to provide an update beyond what it's currently running. Chances are that if using the check for updates button in the status screen results in no updates you'll need to find a 3rd-party ROM with a newer version of Android. Installing those carries some risk, and you likely will have to essentially go through a factory reset during the process.
