Why am I seeing ads on my home screen?

For about 2 months now, I have been seeing pop up ads on my home screen. I have virus protection on my phone, and have had for over 2 years. Scans find no issues, so I am comfortable saying the phone is clean. It's just annoying to be working in an app and have one of these ads "pop in".

It is so random that I haven't tried safe mode.

Worth a try, Safe Mode, unless it would mean keeping it on diagnostically for days or weeks.

Which apps?
Are you on 6.0?
AV is perfect at dealing with adware. I'd give Malwarebytes a go.
What AV are you using? Reached out to them?
Screen shot or camera from another device.
Some malware hides itself from AV products and knows what you are using.
If you are on KitKat or Lollipop need upgrade.
