In messaging app, is there a way to disable notifications while working within the app?

It can be frustrating to be in a conversation with someone within the app and every reply is the default ringtone. There should be a way to either turn off in-app notifications or at least change them so it's not the full blown notification every time. Any help?

This ability is an option that your texting app may or may not implement.
For example, the app Textra gives you the option of not getting a notification sound when viewing the conversation.
