Device, software are the bare minima if you want meaningful and specific help here.
In any case, when you plug in the usb, your device should pop a notification up, pull down the quick settings, tap on the usb notification, there you should see several options. Select MTP.
If you have Nougat installed, you do this from settings... Developer options... Usb configuration... Select MTP.

Try with different cable instead. And please let know what is your device, what popup you are getting, you getting charged or not? tried with other usb ports? please give something in detail
