On default messaging app, how do you change notification sounds?

Hangouts is no longer supporting SMS so I have to use a different one so I used the one that came with my phone. But I can no longer change notification sounds for each individual contact. How do I do that?

Can I make a recommendation here? Without knowing which device you have I'm going to recommend an app off the Google Play Store to be your new messaging app. As a former user of Hangouts too, I feel your pain. However, Google is making a push for people to use the messaging app they created. Android Messages is an app developed by Google intended for SMS. Here is the link below:

Doing individual ringtones is easy. Start a conversation with someone. Inside the conversation in the top right corner is the ellipses stacked on top of each other (3 dots). You'll want to tap the "People & Options" settings. From there, you can control individual notification sounds. Let me know what you think!
