I believe I?m going to have to upgrade my Transformer Prime TF201 because of the Heartbleed vulnerability (http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014). ASUS tech support tell me they do not have a 4.1.2 available and are unaware of any plans by ASUS to release an upgrade.

Although I?ve never gone through a rooting process I am comfortable with handling the technical problems. I am not clear if rooting merely allows the user to install programs the same way that he or she would be able to on a desktop computer or if it allows the complete replacement of the Android overlay to Linux. I think these are the key questions I need to ask:

1) Is it possible to strip out Android 4.1.1 just leaving the Linux kernel.
2) At that point is it an option to leave this as a pure Linux machine that can run regular Linux applications or does Android 4.1.2 need to be installed.
