There's a virus scanner button that can not be pressed. Is it automatically running in the background or what?

It is because you have Uninstalled Dr. Safety which is the default virus manager of zf2 hence the disable button.

I've never heard of or disabled such an app.

It's one of those bloatware that comes pre installed with the Zf2 I.e. Dr. Safety, clean master etc. Etc. If you have disable or uninstalled it Asus mobile manager cannot find it on your installed apps hence the grayed out and or missing button virus scanner button.

I uninstalled my Dr. Safety hence you cannot find the button on my Asus mobile manager..
