I noticed this with the Adam Carolla app, but may be happening elsewhere:
When the app is minimized, it puts an icon in the notification bar with audio controls. It still does this today, post-update.
However, when the screen goes to sleep, or the power button is used to turn the screen off, the notification disappears. This causes the app to stop playing audio when the screen goes dark. The app is still running (but acts like it was paused).
I tried this with Play Music and could not reproduce. I disabled all app-specific power saving profiles and verified that the Carolla app is allowed to send notifications to the lock screen.
I tried this with the old Bell notification model, which was working fine yesterday, as well as the new notification model. Happens in both cases.
