Overdrive on rooted stock
My public library subscribes to the e-book lending service, Overdrive. The nookcolor is listed on their website as a supported ddvice.
<edit>followed Felix's instructions in post 9 of this thread and it is now working!

It was my understanding that you dl Overdrive to the NC> open your local library's web page in the NC browser and navigate to ebooks> find the book you want and it automatically downloads to the device. Is this the method you tried?

I'm able to download directly to my rooted nook without using Adobe Digital Editions.
After some experimentation I found that I had to use the Nook browser, not Dolphin Hd which is my normal browser. I had to set the User Agent as "Mobile Browser", not Desktop.
Go to More Options in the upper right hand corner of the browser, Settings, Browser Mode/User Agent, and select Mobile Browser Mode.
When on my library site via Overdrive I can then download directly to the Nook. The book is then viewed in the Nook side in library, my files, Digital Editions.Thanked by 3: - 03-28-2011, 01:57 PM #10

I got it working too...thanks Felix. Took me awhile to find the 'download link' on my library's page as they all had 'Place a hold' next to the titles. Can't understand why you need to place a hold for an ebook. I realized I needed to check the box that reads, 'only show available titles' and only then did I see the books that allowed me to add to ecart. My NC just keeps getting better!

Re: Overdrive on rooted stock
Hi All,
I'm going to try Felix's suggestion, as it sounds very promising, but I am also having problems opening audiobooks in overdrive. Anyone encountered that?
1. When I try to install Adobe Digital Editions from the Adobe site in Dolphin or the basic browser, I click on the Digital Editions Badge, which then turns into a security 'are you sure?' badge (slightly smaller). When I click on that, instead of commencing to download, it bounces me right back to the original, larger download button. I tried it again in Firefox (suggested browser on Adobe site) and encountered a message that I needed a flash plugin, which I tried to install and couldn't. I'm going to try Felix's suggestion about the Nook browser for this one.
2. When I check out an audiobook from Overdrive, I click the download button, which turns orange... then nothing. No message, nothing. Just sits there.
3. Same thing sometimes happens with an ePub book, but other times I get the 1069 error message, which is no surprise since it means 'Error contacting Adobe License Service' and I haven't been able to get past that loop on the adobe site.
4. So I decided to try to copy Adobe Digital Editions from my Mac (where I can get Overdrive to work just fine) and I can't because the Mac doesn't acknowledge the presence of the NC. Ditto for Calibre -- I can't get the device to register.
I hope this is all clear, and I would really appreciate advice on what I am doing wrong. I am obviously a big old n00b and appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks! - 08-15-2011, 04:29 PM #15
Re: Overdrive on rooted stock
I am having some trouble downloading directly to my NC. I installed the Overdrive app from Android Marketplace. I was able to go to my library's site, and download a book. I am only able to read that book from the Overdrive app.
If I try to open the book from the Nook reader app, I get a screen which asks for the name and credit card that the book was used to purchase the book.
The book is not downloaded into the Digital Editions folder, but the Overdrive folder.
If I try to download a book from the library without the Overdrive app installed, only a .acsm file is downloaded.
I have tried both the stock browser and Dolphin HD. The results are the same.
Does anyone have some suggestions to make this work with the Nook reader? - 08-16-2011, 12:56 AM #16
Re: Overdrive on rooted stock
Update: I finally got overdrive to load directly onto my Nook in Droid mode, thanks to the help from all of you. Thank you!!!
I went through and made certain that everything ADE, Overdrive, and the nc-as-droid were all using the same gmail account, check... but then discovered that ADE was authorized on my Mac via a different email address. That was baffling because I de-installed and re-installed ADE with the gmail account ID just to be absolutely certain, but the sbcglobal address was there in the authorization information. I deauthorized ADE using CTRL-SHIFT-D and reauthorized using the gmail account and Skadoosh! success! After only five days of obsessing, teeth gnashing, hair pulling, and garment rending.
Felix, you are the wind beneath my wings.Last edited by Tlypo; 08-16-2011 at 12:22 PM.
