So as instructed after getting the phone and having to charge it for the first time,I read that a few hours until it's 100% is enough. I did that. Charged it right before bed, turned off all programs, wifi, everything and yet in the morning it had 68%. Does this mean the battery itself is damaged or I somehow charged it wrongly, like not enough? Please help.

Hello! Welcome to Android Central!! You should leave your phone on the charger until is at 100%. Also, why not leave it on the charger all night so you have 100% when you wake up?
In the android operating system, loads of things run in the background. It's just the nature of the OS. Here is a link to some battery saving tips for your device.
