Default Never rooted, going to try, couple of quick questions

OK, I just got a Droid 2 (long story why). The phone is great but I really want to wireless tether so I'm planning on rooting for that reason only. My question is:

Can I just root the way Jerry outlined in the rooting for newbies post and then just install one of the wifi tether apps from the market?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
