As some of you may have noticed with your new bionic, your sd card has aptly been named sdcard-ext and the proper name for the sd card "sdcard" is actually used as INTERNAL storage. From what I can see, this is also the case with the dx2 and the d3..

Is this a Motorola thing or a gingerbread thing?

I think it is both actually. It is the first step toward eventually phasing out SD cards entirely. Right now they support both but by default your data is stored on the internal memory and formating the internal memory is a different option from a factory data reset
