Update installed... can I root now?

Ok, I'm still not sure what "rooting" is exactly, and that's why I didn't do so before. (A short and sweet explanation would probably be helpful.)

My question is, I have downloaded the update successfully this evening, although I've not had time to test it out yet. Can I root the bionic now or is it too late, until someone figures out something else? Thanks!

EDIT: For the 2nd part of your question, No, the update cannot be rooted directly. You would have to follow the directions I wrote out here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/bi.../140960-ota-5-5-893-lost-root-click-here.html

Thank you for the info. I will probably wait a bit before trying to root. Maybe some of the bugs will get worked out and I won't be as intimidated!
