Default Have to pull phone away from face to adjust call volume?

Is there anyway to fix this? It's really annoying.
If you don't know what I'm taking about, it's when you get a call and either the volume is too low or tool high. You can't adjust the volume with the side control unless you first pull the phone away from your face for the screen too light up. I'm guessing they did it so you don't accidentally change the volume while on a call, but I find it very annoying

The volume will change without you moving it from your face, BUT the sensitivity of the volume rocker is considerably diminished while it is against your ear. Give it another try, this time hold down the desired volume button.

It does work (as DroidnewVZ says)... when against your face, the change is more minute and takes longer. This is by design so that you don't need such a sensitive touch in a somewhat awkward position, and wind up having the volume go way up or down to nothing too fast.
