To avoid having your phone roam for voice and data just put the phone in airplane mode, then turn on wifi afterwards. That will have all your cellular radios off while still being able to use wifi.

As for using the ship's wifi without paying for it, I can't help you. I don't know what the ship charges for the use of their wifi service, but I'm sure it's far cheaper than an international roaming bill.

If you decide to not be a thief, I'm sure the ship's concierge can help you set up wifi access.

The ship has to be using a satellite connection to the larger internet, although they may have an onboard server for cruise related info.

That satellite isn't cheap, and the cruise line isn't getting it for free, but they may have free wifi available but hidden in the fine print (hoping nobody makes use of it).

I'd google cruiselinename + onboard + wifi first to see if anybody has had any demonstrated success.

Also, every compartment is going to be a faraday cage, so if wifi is available it may be in only one area onboard.

Also, also, beware of somebody setting up a fake hotspot with a cruiselineish name and stealin' ur personal datas.

I've been on many cruises. No loop holes for free wifi. They use satellite connection which will run $2.50 to $3.75 a minute. Also connection speed is sloooow! Having net connection on the ship is mute. Unless your a big business tycoon must receive emails, use their Internet cafe and buy a net card. Other then that, YOU ARE ON VACATION ! Leave your cell phone, tablet, and other devices in your cabin, and leave everything behind and enjoy yourself. Party and drink and tell everyone you get back with them when you get back.

    From experience..

    Enjoy your cruise untethered!!

I have been on a few different cruise lines and prices vary. You can get wifi usage in blocks of minutes on Carnival for three and four day cruises you can get 30 and 60 minutes for an avg of 50 cents a minute on the 7 day cruise we took in August I believe the price for 100 minutes was around $50-55 and 250 min. for $100.
