    Default Massive Unintended Data Usage?

After upgrading one of the lines on my Verizon account, I lost my unlimited data. I wasn't too worried about this, since the worst month of usage I ever had was 2.5GB, and that was with never using Wifi. I figured everything would be fine.

I have been monitoring my data usage and am getting towards the end of my first cycle on the new plan. Two days ago, our usage jumped up by about .5GB. When I went in and checked, I discovered it was my line that was at fault. If the time on Verizon's page is to be believed, my phone used 557MB of data right when I left work.

For the record, I leave data off all day while I'm at work, turn it on when I leave for my 10min drive home, then am on Wifi the rest of the night.

I investigated this incident further on my Bionic through the Data usage area, and it seems like Opera Classic (my browser of choice up to this point) is at fault. I usually leave a few tabs open (Android Central, Droid Life, CNN, and my local newspaper), but nothing that should have used data like this. And I doubt I even opened Opera until after I got home anyway.

I also had another incident where this occurred about a week and a half earlier. 300MB was used. Again, based on the Data Usage app it seems that Opera was the culprit.

I'm still within my data cap, but am concerned if something like this would happen right at the end of a cycle, forcing me into an overage before I realize it and backdate in a change.

Any idea what may have happened here? Could there have been some kind of endless loop that just kept downloading a page over and over?

Any thoughts on how to investigate this further?

Any suggestions on how to prevent this in the future? I have seen some people on the web claiming Chrome did this to them, but the only solution was to uninstall and move on to another browser.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

The constant refreshing of webpages by the browser, or advertisements? Haha just a guess!

I would advise using Opera Mini. Compresses everything, and saves me around 400 to 500 Mb of data a month!

Still seems like a whole lot of data for just ads. Maybe the video ad at the top of the Android Central page kept downloading or something like that?

I had tried out Opera Mini and regular Opera, but didn't like some stuff about both of them (can't remember exactly what - maybe just slow on my Bionic), so I switch back to Classic. But if I see this data problem being persistent, I'll definitely have to switch to something!

Have you ever thought of using Juice Defender?

hold up - you had unlimited data on one line of a family account. then you upgraded one of the other lines, and you still got your unlimited data taken away? what did you upgrade? i am in this same situation and i was going to go thru with an upgrade...but not if it will cost me my data

Add a dummy line, transfer your upgrade to that line, upgrade, deactivate the phone, then reactivate it on your unlimited line. You won't lose your unlimited data this way.

Christopher - No, I haven't tried Juice Defender, at least for this data problem. I might have tried it before to help save battery, but didn't keep it around. Can it help protect from problems like I experienced? Somehow alerting me and stopping an app that suddenly wants a lot of data while not on Wifi?

shadowsjc - As Christopher said, there are supposedly ways to get a subsidized new phone without losing unlimited. I also think I've heard some people say you can upgrade your phone, switch to the new plan, and if you call Verizon within 15 days and say you want unlimited back, they'll give it to you. But I have never tried any of these techniques personally and didn't want to deal with the hassle. So I just gave up and switched to the new plan, knowing that I don't require unlimited data. At least when I don't have apps downloading 500MB at a shot for no reason...

Within the Data Usage section of the settings you can set a Mobile Data limit and also set a Data usage alert that should keep you from going over and alert you when you are getting close. Make sure that you put in your data usage plan cycle so that it keeps track of it according to when you have to pay your bill. I am like you and don't need unlimited data and switched over a year ago and have never even come close to going over my 4Gb limit. (I got the 2Gb and they doubled it for the same price to 4Gb) It's not as frightening as some makes it out to be.. LOL

The crazy thing for me is that the data usage section shows i'm using 15 mb's, and verizon claims 13 gbs.

so even if we set the warning, it's not working.

also tried TURNING OFF MOBILE DATA.

still getting recordings of 300-500 mbs in ONE DAY on the verizonwireless.com usage report, on my settings it says A LOT LESS. like 10 mb's sometimes just KBs.

during the period the mobile data was turned OFF, the data usage record on the phone setttings DOES say 0, but then verizonwirless usage says 300!!!!!

    !!!!!!!!!!!what the heck!

    It's absoluetly insane
