Speculation, best guesses on "expanded features, functionality"?

(First time poster so please forgive any newbie mistakes)

In an email* that Motorola's Becki Leonard sent to phonesreview.co.uk, in response to an article that the Droid was dead, she stated:

"Based on compelling feedback since the show, we are incorporating several enhancements to make this an even better consumer experience. This includes expanded features, functionality and an improved form factor"

Not to pick this apart too much as the rabid Bionic seeker that I am but I am curious what they are adding to the Bionic.

"Several enhancements" Makes me think of perhaps more RAM, a higher megapixel FFC, maybe a 1.2 GHz dual core proc, Gingerbread?

"Improved form factor" leads me to believe this will not be the Droid we are familiar with from pics on Moto's site. Perhaps it is just a renamed Targa.

What pricks up my ears is the bit about "expanded features, functionality". What could this mean? Could it be that Moto is bringing NFC to the Droid? Gingerbread supports NFC and it's been rumored that the next iPhone will have it. The Nexus S has NFC as will the Galaxy S II.

What are your thoughts?

1. they better not add a camera hump to it!! No way am I buying a phone with a hump.

2. hopefully battery life will be enhanced--I want to go 10+ hours with moderate usaage.

3. a non-pentile display would be nice.

4. 1GB Ram

I am going to be so pissed if they give us a Bionic with a hump!!!! I'm so sick of my Storm2. I was fully expecting to be owning a Bionic within the next few weeks. I'm not crazy about the TB, so here I sit, an unhappy BB owner, wanting some 4G goodness to come my way SOON.

I feel like most complaints about the RAM dealt with people not understanding it was DDR2 RAM. So not entirely sure if that will get changed or not.

I think the FFC will get a bump to at least 1.3 MP.

If it is the Targa then it seems like the backside camera could also get a substantial bump up(of course that might mean a hump as well).

I wouldn't mind NFC being included although not sure when we should expect that to become standard at most stores. Probably be one of those features where it is nice to include but would not be close to a make or break feature.

I'd think if we are looking at a mid to late summer release, then it should almost definitely come with GB on it. I think it would be sad if it was still released with Froyo.

If you look at other threads on this forum and other sources such as HoFo the general consensus is that a phone called the Targa is taking the place of the Etna which was the original Bionic.

Little information is known about the Targa at this time outside of a few pictures of it. Speculation has it that it has an OMAP4 CPU, and a 13MP rear facing camera, and of course the "hump" (gasp!). Beyond that, we're patiently waiting for more leaks and/or the information to be officially published by Moto.

I think it will double as a flying carpet and have tiny efficient oxygen tanks for people that scuba dive. The headphone jack is where you plug the air hose and mouthpeice into.

Purely speculation of course but it's something to think about.

I believe it also will double as a MRE if you get stuck on a desert island.

Of course. But I heard it included prime rib to make it a high-end MRE worthy of the Droid name.

Its the contingency in case of a flying carpet malfunction in hostile airspace.

Wow, hadn't heard that before. Too bad as that nixes this phone for me as the wife won't have that!!

We are not jaded we are just goofing off : )

Welcome to AC though! We get crazy from time to time because of all the Bionic hoopla. As you know its been a crazy ride. Without humor people start killing eachother over this phone.

Flies?? I thought Snyders was gonna take care of that problem for us. Guess will have to send 'the boys' to have a talk with him.

Maybe he got an engineering sample of the enhanced bionic and hasn't been able to leave his bedroom.

*grin* no need for that. Happily married to a woman with a mutual desire to work on some rugrats this summer. It's one reason why I've held onto my upgrade too.. my disposable income is gonna take a big hit when we succeed. :-)

A little absurdity and levity does the mind good.

The bottom line is that the exact details as to what the Targa/Bionic is hasn't been leaked fully. All we do know is it may use the OMAP4 processor and has a 13MP rear camera. Beyond that, this thread is speculation masturbation.

I'm sure this forum will go nuts as soon as we do start seeing either official releases or leaks from credible sources.

Regarding form factor ... why would Motorola put out two phones with similar and supposedly "unique" form factors? I can understand multiple "slab" or "candy bar" form factor phones, as they are really the "norm" and every manufacturer has multiple phones with this form factor. But, the Droid X was rather revolutionary (or at least unique) in it's styling, in large part because of the humpty hump. Similarly, the DInc had unique backside, which seems to be carried on in it's successor in the DInc 2. And again with the original Droid and its bevel that was passed on to its successor, the Droid 2 (and seemingly will be passed on to the Droid 3).

But, rather than keep the unique styling to a phone and it's successors, it looks like the Bionic may inherit the Targa form factor, which is incredibly similar to the DX. So, at release, there will be the DX2 (the successor of the DX) and the Targa -- two very similar styled phones, thereby making the styling no longer unique to a particular line of phones, i.e., the DX/DX2. I would have suspected that the unique and revolutionary styling would be limited to a particular line, thereby maintaining its uniqueness. Obviously, time will tell if the Bionic truly does inherit the Targa form factor, but why have two "unique" style form factors from the same manufacturer?
