I've actually taken some decent pictures with the phone. I think the internet latched onto the consensus that the camera wasn't that great and ran with it. It's been no worse than my old DX. I'll try to upload some tomorrow.
I find it hard to believe that people are getting hung up on the camera as if that determines the phone's overall value. It's a sweet phone with great internals for $99.
Well, I have an old DX too and the camera is really bad. Your comment isn't reassuring ! ;-)
And as to the camera impacting the overall value of the phone ... I agree it isn't the be-all, end-all, but I have a flip phone now that works great as a phone. Part of the reason for switching to the MUCH more expensive smartphone with the MUCH more expensive data package is the value added by the camera. Both the ease of sharing and the quality of the pics. I know smart phones do a whole lot more than just be a phone and camera, but I place a very high priority on the quality of the camera. Just because I may value it more than you do, it doesn't mean you are right and I am wrong.
M I just don't understand all the fuss. Even with your explanation, what are your realistic expectations for a camera on a phone? Have you seen any uploaded pictures or pictures from reviews that you feel are so grossly terrible that you couldn't get by with the phone?
I really love this phone so far, but the camera has been sadly disappointing. I did some trial shots in regular mode, HDR and I also used the Vignette app (which I love - do download). To be fair I took control shots with a Galaxy S2 and an Iphone 4. The difference in quality is remarkable. This might be a deal breaker for me.
I'm no expert, but I don't think software upgrades would fix this. Am I correct? It's more about the hardware (lens, etc.) in this case...?
