Now that you've pointed it out, I, too am curious.
It states that it can edit, read and receive text messages, but how and from where?

It can be disabled, which I will probably do. Just wondering what it's purpose is before I do.

This app records keystrokes, reads email and text messages, and monitors browser use. This info is forwarded to Carrier IQ which is a company that monitors how cell phones are used to help companies see what their products are used for. Yuck.
