Default Motorola has the best antennas???

I have a maxx hd and my wife has a iphone 5. yesterday, i took them both out to the same areas and compared signal strength and dbm. the iphone actually held full bars 4g in areas where the maxx was at 2 bars 3g. what gives???

Assuming your wife is also on verizon, the bars measure the signal strength for phone calls, not data connections and it is up to the manufacturer to set what signal strength corresponds to what number of "bars", so comparison of "bars" between different phones is not very useful. However, she had 4G and you did not so that is clearly better. Apple makes a very good antenna too, and I guess in that location it worked better than the Maxx. Oh well.
If your wife is not on verizon, than the answer is just that verizon is weaker in that particular location.

Motorola does generally have superior antennas compared to the rest of it's competition. The issue I'm noticing is that the RAZR HD seems to have a weaker signal then my RAZR Maxx did but we shall see if it's software related as Motorola has said a few times. Also, maybe the iPhone connected to a different tower and you were in an outside "Expanded Area". This can happen although I don't expect it to make sense because it should not happen.

My iphone had troubles staying connected to the wifi in my own house if I was too far from the router. My Razr Maxx HD asks me if it can connect to people's wifi as I'm driving down the road it's so good.

My RAZR Maxx HD (3 total, 4th comes tomorrow) have ALL had an issue staying connected to multiple different router setups. If the 4th fails and Motorola can't fix it then I'm going to fight for a Note II. I didn't pay retail for a broken phone that I feel was messed up already but got worse in the Wi-Fi department with Jelly Bean.

Since owning my Droid Razr Maxx HD, for me the signal has been pretty solid. I had both this phone and my old HTC Rezound phone side by side reading the dBm and they were pretty much identical in both voice and data. The only radio issue I had w/ my Rezound phone was the 3G would randomly drop out and the only way to restore it was by rebooting (4G was solid). Luckily I have not had any data connectivity issues with the Razr Maxx HD.

Now if you were to compare the radios in a HTC & Motorola smartphone against Samsung... You'd know right away. The radios Samsung use for their smartphones SUCK. I've compared the SG3 Verizon model to my Rezound and Razr HD Maxx, I find all Samsung smartphones (not just Verizon models) in general to consistently have -30dBm (higher is bad) than the other two devices for both voice & data.... Not only that, but running speed test comparisons, I found the speedtests results were 30% slower vs HTC or Motorola when running tests via 3G/LTE & wifi.

Funny, my Note II was superior to my 4 RAZR Maxx HD. My original Maxx was great though but the HD seemed to be a let down. It held 1X signal just fine though but anything higher was lower. At times I miss the superior build quality but the other issues I'm glad I'm rid of.

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note II using Tapatalk 2.
