Smart Actions
There are a couple of smart actions I'd like to set up but can't quite figure out.
1) Automatically turn on wifi when I get home - Exactly what it sounds like
2)Let VIP Callers ring while phone is silent - I'd like for my wife and kids' calls to ring through even though the phone is silenced. I sometimes work nights and sleep during the day and I need to be aware of any calls from them while not being awoken by random notifications and calls throughout the day.
If anyone knows how to set up these smart actions, I'm all ears.Droid Razr Maxx

I know that if you use juice defender you can train it to pick up your home wifi and automatically connect once you are within range. It sorta "trains" it so for optimal performance it might take a few days. My wifi is on within seconds of entering my house

Re: Smart Actions
For (1) above, try Verizon WiFi Auto On from the Market. Works great for me!

Re: Smart Actions
I think location would require GPS to identify and therefore use more battery. Same issue with Verizon Wi-Fi Auto-On. I think I'll just stick with tapping my wifi widget when I get home. Not that big a deal...

Re: Smart Actions
If you check what I have above it will solve your problem. You do not need GPS. And with the WiFi on you I have not had negative battery use.
When I walk into my home up north, or in Florida, I connect to the WiFi router and it turns off the data from the 4G or 3G. Also it starts my BT so that my cellphone connects to my BT home phone and I leave my cell in my closet.
Works great.Just love my GN2

Re: Smart Actions
Hey, my Maxx is shipping in about a week. I also work nights and need my wife's calls to come through during the day. Could you describe how you solved this problem. I've tried a few apps on my Fascinate and they just won't work since the GB update. Thanks.

Re: Smart Actions
Go into Smart Actions and use the preset sleep mode. Set it up so when your phone is plugged in and no motion is detected, it silences the phone. Then add any numbers you want to come through to the VIP list and you'll be set. The sleep mode is pretty much set up for you.

Re: Smart Actions
I think leaving wifi on uses battery while it's searching for networks constantly...however that solution you have is not too bad. A good idea for someone who's maybe the only one at home.
When I get home and turn on wifi, my 3G data goes white so I think that means it's using my wifi, basically same solution as yours, I just have to enable it when I get home.Droid Razr Maxx

Re: Smart Actions
How about you set up two rules.
1. When the phone connects to wifi, turn off cellular data
2. Set up a time-frame rule that will turn your wifi on when you'd normally be home. That way your wifi isn't on all day, but when you expect to be home it turns on activating rule 1.
This would effectively automate everything with the least amount of power drain. - 03-06-2012, 07:56 PM #15
Re: Smart Actions
Let me say this about the battery. Today I took it off the charger at 6AM. Did a lot of web searching and phone calls. As well as some updating of the phone. it is now 9PM and I have 38% battery life left.
Oh yes, the WiFi has been on and as I was working from home a good portion of the day my BT was connected to my home phone thus all cell in bound calls came through the BT to my home phone.
Not bad life.....

Re: Smart Actions
Hi,
Hoping your can help me out. I'm new to android and currently test driving the Droid Razr Maxx. So far, loving this phone and I really enjoy the smart actions! One problem, I cannot get my VIP Action to work correctly. The phone will not ring for my selected contacts. It remains either in vibrate or silent for everyone. I've tried at least a hundred times. Now, I'm wondering if it's a problem with my device. Please help.
Btw, I'm cannot go back to the preset "Sleep"rule because I've already adjusted that one with different triggers and actions. It's working fine but w/o the VIP option. - 03-24-2012, 02:31 PM #17
Re: Smart Actions
I was trying to do a wifi auto on at home too. But in the smart actions app you can set an action for wifi on but the trigger for location is grayed out. If you set a trigger for location, wifi (and airplane mode) are grayed out. What gives there??

The idea behind smart actions for wifi is what you are looking for. You set the trigger to turn on wifi and location on, so that you can leave wifi off totally, then when you get home it turns on automatically by location and it connects to wifi. I have a app called wifi matic. It does exactly that by using cell tower locations. It remembers the towers location, so when you arrive at your house, the app picks up towers it remembered and turns on wifi and connects.

Re: Smart Actions
I would like to use SA if you can help me figure out how to trigger an action like turning on Wi-Fi when I get home and turning it off when I leave, without having GPS active already. I like to leave all my location services off until I need them because of the draw the 3 extra RF sections cause to the battery. Google Location Services (Wi-Fi locations), Standalone GPS (Satellite locations) and VZW Location services (VZW Cells). That and for the same security issues that's been in the news lately, I prefer Google not track me. Just a personal preference
Definitely not looking for a debate. Just some suggestions on how to make Smart Actions work for me. It just seems like to make certain triggers work, you have to leave something on all the time whether that be the GPS or the Wi-Fi. Let me know what you think. - 03-30-2012, 04:08 PM #23
Re: Smart Actions
I use the sound SA. Trigger is Timeframe. Actions are Ringer Volume set to silent, VIP Caller Mode insert those names in your contacts that you want to give permission to. Make sure the phone number or numbers are there as well. If more than one, you will have to make additional entries for each #.

Re: Smart Actions
If you are that paranoid, then you should stick with whatever you are using. I'm not and I leave Google Location Services on 24/7.
Currently Smart Actions does not allow you to turn on and off Wi-fi by a location... I do wish it would make that change at some time, but I'm fine with that. I leave my Wi-fi on 24/7 unless I'm on a trip and have no access to a wireless connection. Leaving Wi-fi on 24/7 does not drain my battery by any significant amount when I'm away from any connection... nor does it concern me that it is on all the time.Droid Razr Maxx
