I had the very same experience. I was successful with bluetooth file transfer after selecting menu then contacts. Having successfully transferring my contacts I was then perplexed by not being able to make a phone call.

If you have a VOIP phone app running you need to select the cellphone dialer app a
s opposed to ask me or VOip app dialer.

    Hi All,

Just purchased a Galaxy S3 and found the same problem with syncing contacts to my BMW E90 idrive.
Connecting via bluetooth was fine but no names and numbers on screen.

I found that you firstly need to make sure that the car can access the phone book. I did this by completing the pairing between car and phone as normal. Once this is done turn off the Bluetooth on the phone in the drop down menu from the home screen. The car then disconnects, then turn it back on and you'll get a pop up saying connecting. Once it connects then another popup asks for permission to access the phone. Check the box and hit yes.

Now, to get the contact on the idrive you need to edit each individual contact and assign it to the group 'My Contacts'. (it may work with other groups i haven't tried)
All my contacts were 'Not assigned' to a group so therefor not synced to the car.
Once this is done, turn off the Bluetooth like above and turn on again and the car connects and you should see your contacts appear.

I hope this works for you............

This is going to sound really stupid but when I download the 'Bluetooth File Transfer' app I can't find the menu and therefore can't access the 'Contact Transfer' process. Can anyone please help? Rob 3591

I have the same problem with the S3 and my Jeep Grand Cherokee.....but I have something like 3500+ contacts! There is no way I can go in an individually assign each contact to "My Contacts"! I there a way to "select all" and then assign??

This seems to be a quite common problem. I am therefore surprised and disappointed that neither the car dealership nor the mobile phone dealers seem to even recognise that there is this problem let alone being able to offer any advice for its resolution. Next thing with bluetooth pairing is that I would like my car's media device interface when it is playing music from my phone to also receive and display the artist and song title info.

I tried it with my galaxy S3 and it worked perfectly. You just have to keep pressing download contacts as many times as it comes up.

I purchased a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Limited May 2012. The dealer connected, paired & loaded contacts to the car's bluetooth system after much time and difficulty. About a month later, I got in my car & didn't realize my cell phone was at home. I attempted to use bluetooth to make a phone call. Immediately, everything was de-programmed, disabling bluetooth.

After 7 attempts total, at the car dealership, over the phone with Hyundai, over the phone with HTC and AT&T, I could connect the cell to the car's bluetooth, but the system WILL NOT PAIR or download contacts. Countless hours have been put into solving this issue.

The dealership & AT&T say it's a problem with the phone (which I suspect). However, HTC feels it's a problem with the car. How could it install (with difficulty) properly once, but then never again? What do you advise? It's truly been a shame to be unable to access such a wonderful feature...

    Hoping for more,
    April

I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra and have successfully paired my Samsung SII and accepted the option to allow the phone to access the phonebook however when it does it is not bringing across all contacts and is not listing them in alphabetical order. I have "unpaired" device from phone, turned off bluetooth and deleted device from car bluetooth several times. Do you have to have your contacts saved to sim or phone? Any ideas please would be greatly appreciated?

My husband recently bought a Grand Cherokee and was having problems transferring his contacts. After several attempts, it became clear that the error was in his phone book entries. Some he had put a 1+ in front of the area code, others he had put () around the area code, others he had not entered a first and last name for a company (the transfer did not read company names), some he had failed to enter an area code. After the errors had been corrected, we deleted the phonebook from the car, unpaired the phone and started all over again. It took a couple of tries before we got his phonebook (on his cell phone) straightened out, but once we got the original corrected, and went through the deletion, unpairing, re-pairing, uploading processes, it finally worked. I don't know if this helps you, but you may want to check your entries so they are consistent with how your cell phone expects entries to occur. Good luck.

I was able to successfully transfer my contacts from my phone to my Hyundai Sorento. First, I had to go to Contacts and select Share Contacts. All the contacts were then check marked to share.
Then at the same menu for contacts, I had to select " Import/Export" when the menu selections changed I had to select "Export to storage" which then gave me a file name with a .vcf extension where I selected "OK". Once I did all that the file transfered to the car system via bluetooth.

I have a droid x, I was able to get my phone book transferred by going on the phone to my dialer, with contacts displayed, click settings button, click "Share Contacts" then check off each one I wanted to go, click "done" then "bluetooth" then had to select which bluetooth devise to send then too.

Thumbs up Re: Contacts do not show in car bluetooth pairing

I just recently purchase a 2014 Toyota Camry SE not realizing that my model did not have the voice activated bluetooth controls to make phone calls and such. I was having issues with transferring my contacts to the vehicle to make calls. The only way this was working for me was to either dial from my phone or manually enter the phone number via the touchscreen. I was then able to save the contact as one of the speed dials, but not able to edit to provide a name. After doing some lengthy searching online I found several forums such as this where people were experiencing similar problems with a wide variety of make and models of vehicles. I did just today discover probably the easiest fix (especially for those of us with the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, as I have):
    1. Go to the Google Play Store
    2. Click the Search icon
    3. Type in 'Bluetooth Phonebook' in the search field
    4. The first two options are the applications that worked for me
    5. Download the trial version to ensure that this allows your vehicle to transfer your contacts over

I went to the bluetooth screen of my car and selected the options for my Contacts and they were already beginning to transfer (very fast process, less than a minute). From what it sounds like from the various forums that I have read is that for some reason this phone does not enable PBAP or IrMC that some vehicles require to transfer the contacts. This application enables both of those bluetooth file transfer options.

I ended up paying the $1.95 for the full application, but that was money well worth avoiding the headache any longer.

I hope this helps for all of you!

Same problem here in a 2012 Sonata 2.0T with a Droid RAZR M. Tried the Bluetooth app, but phonebook never transfers, even after I give permission on the phone.

    Hi all.

After finally converting to Android I now have an issue which this thread nearly answers. I have a Galaxy S4 which is amazing. I have just picked up my new car with built in Bluetooth. It keeps asking me to send my contact via Bluetooth from the phone to the car.

I cant seem to find the correct way to do this.

    Any help gratefully received!

2013 Genesis Coupe and Droid Razr Maxx HD. Tried unpairing and removing references to each other to facilitate a "fresh start". Pairs up easily and even asks me if I want to share my contacts and call history in dialog boxes. I answer Yes to both questions. The Contacts button on the Genesis' screen lights up! I press it and it says There is No Phonebook. I've tried "sharing" my contacts with the Genesis via Bluetooth with no success either.

    Feh.

Welcome to Android Central! When the car asks you to send the phonebook to the car, check the phone itself--is there a notification asking you if it's ok to communicate with the car?

I am beginning to believe it is an Android issue that we cannot connect our wireless phone books. I bought a Kia Optima, my auto salesman connected my Motorola Droid Bionic successfully. Then an update came along to the phone (Verizon, by the way), and I lost the communication to the phone book. Never worked since. I have just upgraded to a Samsung S4, nothing, same error, cannot find phone book. I tried my Daughters LG Octane and it worked flawlessly. I think its time to get out of the Smart Phone race and revert back to the simple phones.

Welcome to Android Central! It could also be related more to the car's software, and problems with compatibility or communication with the phone. I've seen various posts about problems with Hyundais, and I would guess Kias are essentially the same.

Personally, I've never had any difficulty when pairing phones (first Razr Maxx, now Nexus 5) with my car (BMW). It'd be interesting to find out if there are car brands that tend to have more problems with BT pairing.
