Home and search buttons unresponsive

I'm hoping someone can help me with my wife's RAZR MAXX. She just got her replacement (brand new, not CLN) and it was working fine for a few days but tonight after the battery died completely there were a couple problems after charging for a bit and powering back on. Her home and search buttons do absolutely nothing now and the device never locks like it should when the screen times out as well as manually shutting the screen off. We've tried powering off for a few minutes then powering back on but that didn't solve the issue. The menu and back buttons work fine, however. Her phone is not rooted btw and updated with latest software. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, you should never let these new batteries completely drain. This could damage your battery. And when I say new batteries, I mean that they changed several years ago, and don't need to be drained completely to function correctly.... this is bad for these batteries.

You might need to do a factory reset and see if that fixes your issues. It's more than likely what Verizon will tell you to do first just to trouble shoot any major issue... and I'd probably call that a major issues since some of you buttons are not working.

She did indeed do a factory reset which ended up solving the button issue as well as the other issues.

Maybe you had a bad app?

@fatboy - i read the following on another forum: "Your battery isn't calibrated yet. Let it drain completely till it dies, then let it charge till it is full, unplug it let it drain a bit then charge it again".
This true or will this in fact harm the battery?

From what I've read its best to NOT let Lithium-ion batteries (the ones used in most modern cellphones/smartphones) die completely. It is OK if it happens once in a long time but for best performance and life it's best just to always "top up" charge throughout the day (or whenever you can). I try not to let mine drop below 30% personally, and if I'm around the house I'll usually have it close to somewhere I can charge it (and I'll have it full charge before I head to work)

I thought I already said it would hurt the battery.... but I guess I have to say it again and again.

That is old technology... these are not that old. I've heard this said over and over again, but it's totally not true.
