Is there a way to switch from one app to another without having to go to the home screen first?

Also, it seems that apps don't need to be "closed" . . just press the back or home buton?

I think so. I use the pull down menu which shows my other active apps and then I switch to the one I want.

Hold down the home key and it brings up all the recently used apps without taking you to the home screen. Simply select the one you want and repeat to come back to the app you left.

Holding down the home button, will bring up the "Recent apps" list. Other than that, pressing the home button and then hunting down the next app is the usual way.

If you press and hold the home button your most recent apps come up. However, if u touch the upper left corner where it says "recent" you can change it to all apps or downloaded apps. So you can access all your apps without going back to the home screen.
