PSA- Please Hard Reset your Maxx after ICS update!

It is frustrating that users with all of these problems are being told by many experienced forum members to hard reset their devices but don't and continue to ask why they are still having problems in the forums. Nobody likes to have to wipe their device and start over but these phones and operating systems are not designed to just combine files and apps between different OS's and come out working perfectly.

Please take the advice of experienced Android users in these forums and hard reset your devices before asking why things aren't working after the ICS update. If after the hard reset you still have problems that others don't it might be a hardware issue and can only be resolved by getting a different phone. Also, it allows the rest of us to provide more help in tracking down true bugs with the new software instead of dealing with problems that a hard reset will fix.

If you read through most of the posts users having problems are the ones that didn't hard reset and after doing so most if not all of their issues are fixed. We love to help but please help us to help you. Thanks.

Before I do a factory reset, do I have to write down all my apps so that I can reinstall them or can I install them all from the google play on the phone/web site. I know that I have to set up all the apps again and I've seen that ppl are taking screen shots before doing it. What do you recommend doing prior to doing the reset? Thanks

You can do screen shots for layouts but if you open your play store go into my apps in settings and swipe from right to left at top it will say all apps. There will be a list of all the apps you have ever downloaded. Easiest way to redownload them.

Agree, to a degree.....
But experienced Droid users, and I am one of those, sometimes it's easy to forget that it can be intimating resetting your phone.
And everyone is not as tech adept as some.
So, in all fairness, as a forum we should be there to help those in that process, so that they can help others as well.

On the same hand, those with ICS difficulties, or for that matter some other phone difficulties, it's good to know HOW to reset your phone.

Anyone that needs help in that process feel free to drop in over there.

It's ok.
Key thing is with any electronics..BACK UP.. your pix, vids, anything you want to keep beforehand. Send to Google Drive, email to yourself or whatever you need to do. Lots of options out there now.
And go slow and follow the directions and read the screens, you'll be fine.
And you'll enjoy your phone a whole lot more once it's cleaned up.

Well so far the only issue I have seen is a much reduced battery & it may take a few charges to get the battery back in shape & adjust the various settings with ICS.

However, as someone who has rooted my Razr Maxx, won't I lose root?

If yes, unless I get some serious problems, I don't want to hard reset. Rooting my incredible & t-bolt were easy - Razr, not so much.

No. You shouldn't lose root by just doing a factory reset.

Open the app store on your phone after the wipe and go menu my apps Swype to the left and you will see a list of all apps you ever downloaded from the market You can install from there

The guys recommending a hard reset of the Maxx after the ICS update are exactly right. I followed their advice and the few quirks that had popped up on my Maxx are gone. All my Google Play apps reinstalled automatically so the process was easy. Just backup your stuff first.

I did a hard reset and initially it seems better but hard to say since its just been done but I'll give it a few days to get all my apps running.

well I for one tried it without a full reset and it worked ok . BUT even after a full reset ive noticed a few things here and there . considering the fact that this is really a huge upgrade from gingerbread im surprised its gone as smoothly as it has . that being said it still needs a patch or two . A factory reset doesnt fix everything no matter what people say . overall im happy . I wish ICS had the ability to hide apps like GB .

I to installed the update without a hard reset, and i havent noticed one single problem, not to say nothing will happen

I had to do a factory reset to even get ICS to install. I kept getting the can't validate error. It installed fine after that but my battery life was a joke afterwards. I gave it a few days to cycle through but it still ate up my battery. So I went ahead and did the factory reset again today after I was done with work.... Battery life has improved big time. Glad I did it... Was bumming me out there for a few days...

Most people are upset that an update requires one to repeatedly hard reset their phone. I totally understand the frustration. An update should work before being released.

Yesterday's oh so inconvenient update required calling vzw tech support and multiple hard resets. Then they annotated my account. And I still had to go into the store to swap out the brand new (less than 30 days old) Droid Razr Maxx HD for another. And I still haven't found a reasonable answer why the battery indicator turned into a question mark after updating the software.

So instead of berating those of us whose cell was killed because 'they' can't be bothered with testing an update before release, perhaps a little patience would show maturity.

A reset isn't required after a release. It is suggested if you are having issues and you can't find the source of the problem.

Windows is the same way. Always good to reset after an update mainly because it is typically an app causing the weird behavior. Why the app you say, because apps aren't tested specifically on our phones.

I'm not sure about the HD version but the MAXX update is a huge change in the background. They are using a real Android base and adding on moto's parts as framework and addons.
