Headphone Issues

I don't know if it's an issue with the phone itself or just ICS, but the button on my Skull Candy headphones does absolutely nothing when the phone's screen is asleep. I've even installed Headset Button Controller, because it has overrides for this sort of issue, and it still doesn't work. Just to be clear, I'm looking for the button to control my music app (Spotify) the same way it did on my old Incredible. Any idea on what's causing the problem and how I can fix it? Thanks!
