Bluetooth Tether

In preparation for Jellybean breaking Foxfi's wifi tether I've been playing with Bluetooth and I have a question that I can't answer

When connected to foxfi on Bluetooth, many apps on my nexus 7 don't recognize the internet connection. I have found that if I hit share internet on my phone in the mobile hotspots menu I get internet on my nexus but does this count as "tethering " in Verizon's terms? I'm still unlimited so will they charge me for using their hotspots? And if I activate pdanet/foxfi will that "mask" the tethering from Verizon?

I've been using Foxfi wifi for a while and it's amazing but when Jellybean breaks it I need some recourse. And I'm not willing to pay Verizon more money to use the data.
Activating the share Bluetooth internet option is only way I can find to get the apps on the nexus to recognize the internet but if that's not going to affect my bills then is pdanet/foxfi now redundant?

This is one of those things that too specific for Google searches and I can't quite figure it out

I should also mention I'm not in any way rooted at all

I don't know about fox-fi but I use Open Garden for Bluetooth tether. Some apps don't recognize the internet connection but its usable and its masked from Sprint's hotspot sniffing.

Root and hotspot!!!

But if not here is the deal.... Verizon won't charge you for anything (can't) unless you agree to it. Unless it pops up (checking subscription status please wait) and then you confirm an addition to your bill you should be fine. If everyone who accidentally clicked on some paid feature would be giving Verizon hell for it so they build it in so you need user input to buy things. Which is how it needs to be anyway.

OK. I kinda of figured that but it's nice to get confirmation.

So is PDANet+/FoxFi redundant now then? Or does that somehow "mask" usage?

(As to the root and hotspot idea. I'm not opposed to it I just have no idea how to begin at all. Can you point me towards a dummies guide?)

I know for att foxfi masks the usage. It just shows up on the plan in your data plan as normal, it doesn't show up that you were tethering. And I'm running jelly bean, if you use pdanet+ it still works, so I don't know about the whole thing about it not working anymore with jelly bean. As for the verizon data, they can't tell because they do not have direct access to the phone. It will show up that your phone is using data, but it won't show up how unless you use the stock hot spot app.

Edit: to answer your question... I wouldn't recommend using any verizon tethering in the settings to tether. Some people claim they got caught that way on att because apparently carriers can see their tethering apps being used and if you don't pay for tethering they can see that real easy. I would stick to third party options to be safe. One att user used an app that just bypassed the built in hot spot restrictions and used that app.... And he got busted for it more easily. Just food for thought nothing else.
I recommend you pay the 7 dollars and use pda net or use open garden. Although I have had some issues with that working steadily but it is getting better as they update. Because apps have restrictions where they won't recognise Bluetooth Internet (some of them) I suggest that you root if/when you feel comfortable. This way you can use a hotspot app if you need to.

Here is the deal
Verizon can tell that your tethering
Att can too

No matter what you do short of some really in depth stuff if they look hard enough they can. TTL analysis and simply the size of the packets can lead them onto it. The thing is, for the most part they don't care. I tether (hotspot app on root) about 20-30gb a month (wish I didn't have to but that's another story) about 80% is tethering and I have done that for quite a few months with no issues. I did TONS of research on this and some people have gotten caught, but percentage wise you have a better chance of dying in a car accident. So don't be an ***** about it, conserve how you can and you shouldn't have a problem. Try to stay under 10gb and I don't think Verizon would even blink an eye. I'd live to but I'm SOL (another story like I said)
PDA net plugged into the computer hides usage very well though. As for tethering to a tablet the virtue of a VPN (which it uses to connect over Bluetooth) is secure and makes it hard for art and Verizon to catch you. The best way to tether is PDA net on your computer
2nd best is PDA net Bluetooth to a tablet (foxfi)
Third is a root hotspot tether app or foxfi hotspot.
If you want to root your phone on ICS, there is a very simple exploit for it. I was nervous as hell but it was not a big deal at all. Xda developers forum has an exploit for jb right under their razr section. Read up about rooting before you just do it though. Learn about it and know what it all means. That away you can make an informed decision about if you want go do it.
And for reference I saw picture proof of people who tether 40-50gb a month, and I saw one person who did...... hang on for this one. 171gb in a month!!!!!

But wait there's more.... one guy, I kid you not....
269gb!! That's insane! So the way I look at it, verizon had bigger fish to fry.

I made the move from the Verizon Galaxy Nexus to the Maxx a few weeks ago so I had previously been using JB. When the Nexus made the upgrade from ICS to JB I did indeed lose Fox-fi. I also had WiFi Hotspot And USB Tether by SVTP installed and that app continued working. When I moved to the Maxx I had totally forgotten about Fox-fi and installed the SVTP app again. I assume that since the SVTP app kept working on the Nexus after JB that it will continue working on the Maxx. Time will tell the accuracy of my assumption. Fingers crossed.

By the way, although I took a bit of a step back by not having the latest version of android when I moved to a refurbed Maxx, I don't regret it. The battery life on the Maxx is outstanding and the OS on my Maxx is about to be on par with my Nexus. Glad I made the move.

I have paid the $7 for PDANet+ (FoxFi) hence why I want to find a way to make it keep working when I get JB. Their site simply says don't upgrade as a solution, but I think that's a pretty shortsighted response.

Rooting, in fairness, scares the crap out of me. So many terms and conflicting info and if I mess up I'm out a phone and I can't just get a new one from VZ 'cause I broke it. So scary.

You will loose the hotspot tether but not Bluetooth tether in JB. They don't really say that in their description.
Just root it. Learn about the terms, learn about it all and do it!!!

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that I wanted to root JUST FOR THE PURPOSE OF WIFI TETHER. I looked in the rooting forum and I feel a little more educated but I don't want to really DO a lot to my phone. I like it, and when I get JB I'm sure I'll continue to. I just want that touch of extra functionality. Is there a tutorial or method I should look into that is pretty straightforward and recommended?

As stated above, I should at least explore all of my options

The exploit I used consisted of clicking a few buttons and hitting enter every once and awhile. I got it from the xda developers forum. I would link it to you but I dong know if I can do that on this forum. Some forums don't want you posting links to others. Its right I'm theit razr/Max section though.

Open Garden's refusal to put an off switch on the app is keeping me from installing it. Just turning off Bluetooth is not enough.

That was going to be my reply. My first step is to disconnect from the VPN in the status bar. Then turn BT off and swipe away the app from the multitask window.
The devs also manage their forum very well. Posts are answered promptly. You may want to request the off switch there. You can also post logcats to help improve the app.

I did look into the forum and they basically trotted out the fantasy land ideal that we should all share our bandwidth all the time, or the have asked if maybe there should be some incentive system to encourage people to share more of it.

Others had already written the most direct rebuke of the idea before me. It is just unrealistic to not give the end user control if the app on their device in an age of expensive capped data.
