black screen blotchy (bootup / wallpaper)

Last night before going to bed, I noticed that when the phone boots up and if I have a wallpaper that's black, there are irregularly spaced black blotches. This is only noticeable in a dark room, you can't tell at all in a lit room.

Is this normal with Super Amoled screens (maybe glue drying under the screen?)....anyone ever see that and know if it will go away after a few days? Thinking about stopping by Verizon and having them look at it but wanted to see if anyone has ever seen it before going over. Figure if I spent $250, the screen should be defect free.

Thanks

Thank you for posting this, I encountered the same problem lady night when I was about to go to sleep. I have dark black spots scattered around my screen that are only visible in a very dark room in the areas where the screen is black, usually when phone boots up and when i'm waiting for YouTube videos to load on that black loading screen. But it doesn't show up when Web browsing or other activities.

What to do ,.is this normal? Functional wise phone works perfect but those black splotches are irritating if that's normal

Literally won't see those black splotches unless you're in a super dark room and looking at a black image/screen with screen ON, i.e. boot screen

so I had no patience and stopped by a VZ store after work. They took the phone in the back, saw the screen defect, and swapped it for a new one.

I went back to Verizon as soon as I got home and saw the splotches. The Rep and I went through 5 phones, and all of them had splotches. I ended up going with my previous one because it had the least amount. He said that he is going to contact Motorola because the splotches were on all of the phones.

I'm glad i'm not the only one with this problem, it seems like its affecting alot of us. Im hesitant about getting my phone exchanged for another razr that had this "defect".

nevil did your replacement still have blotches as well?

After reading a bit more about it, it seems to be a oled/samoled "issue". Other devices have it as well, Zune HD, Galaxy SII, Nokia N8/9. After multiple exchanges of these devices, users have reported that there new units having it as well. I'm personally leaning towards keeping the razr I have.

The one and only,

Do you notice the black blotches on your device as well? Its definitely not a stick pixel or dead pixel defect from what I understand, because you would be able to see those blotches clearly with any image on the screen. I only see these blotches on certain black screens and only in dark rooms

I am contemplating the decision to walk in the store to exchange my device but I think it won't be worth it?

Yes, mainly on the boot animtion and on certain black wall papers. Only in pitch black rooms.

From doing a couple of searches and reading other forums, the "issue" seems to be persistent on oled screens. The decision is yours on whether or not you want to make an exchange.

I got the razr yesterday and it seems like a great phone, but I have the same issue that everyone else is having. Last night when I noticed it, I went back to the Verizon store and there happened to be a motorola representative in at the time. I asked to speak with him and he explained to me what this phenomenon is. He said that it has to do with it being a super amoled display, which uses a gel based substance. I believe him, because I asked him if I could see his razr and sure enough his did it to! He said that there is nothing wrong with my phone.(B.S.) I came from a droid x and just wanted to upgrade to something nicer, but this screen issue is a deal breaker for me. Think about it, you spend $300 + tax and they cannot even make a screen that displays correctly! My droid x DOES NOT have this problem. If anyone can convince me otherwise, I will be returning it today. The screen looks great with color, but every time I look at a dark screen (black or any other dark color) I see these really unacceptable dark splotches! When you have a top of the line phone there is no excuse to have an issue like this. Lets put this into perspective. So....this means you can't have any dark wallpapers, view dark videos, have a black theme for that sake, or even turn your phone on without seeing these stupid little lines and splotches. Motorola is selling us there mistake! I don't care how thin it is, there is no excuse. I now feel like just holding out until motorola gets a phone that is thin(probably thinner), has a removable battery, better battery life and does not have a screen problem! As a wrap, I have owned many smartphones and none of them have EVER had a problem similar to this.On top of it, what is a phone without its screen?:)

The new phone has the splotches but after reading all of the responses I'm just going to accept the defect. Other than the splotches this phone is incredible. I've had long battery life and its very fast. I have a feeling this is going to result in a lot of returns...a shame since the phone is beautiful.

I noticed this too when I pulled mine out when it finally arrived on Thursday. Didn't look like a defect per say, but some manufacturing process with the phone. It looks like some sort of residue from whatever adhesive they used to attach the gorrila class to the phone or that splash guard. It isn't too much of an issue for me to return the phone over it.

The answer is NO.
It has a Thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD).
And the Droid X2 sports a RGBW PenTile.

As stated before in this thread, the blotchiness is a drawback of Super Amoled screens.
My Razr has a very thin line in the middle. Not really noticeable, so I'm not going to freak out and go ape-crazy and fling poo at Verizon or Motorola over this issue.
Other than that, my Razr is a beast and she rocks!

I actually went to Verizon today and returned the phone. It made no sense to keep something that isn't right when my old phone was perfectly fine.

BTW

I know the super amoled screen is super vivid, but from what I experienced with my razr, it does not seem as clear as my droid x does. It also seemed to have a green tint to it(not super obvious).

Basically, I want to wait until this technology is out of the "experimental" phases. For those of you who have the razr and can live with that issue, enjoy the phone! Its just not something I felt comfortable keeping for the price.
