How do I know if cellular data is on?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but in the discussion of battery life it was mentioned that you can turn off cellular data when connected to WiFi to conserve power. When I am on WiFi, I still see 3G or 4G LTE and the signal indicator, but they are white. The Wi-Fi indicator is blue. If I deliberately switch off WiFi, the 3G or 4G LTE indicator turns blue and the up/down arrows indicate some activity. So I was assuming that when connected to WiFi, the cellular data was inactive. Am I wrong?

Yes, apparently it's in standby mode but not transmitting or receiving. I just set up a "Smart Action" to turn off cellular data when I have a WiFi connection, and turn WiFi off and cellular data on when I have a Bluetooth connection to my car. I also will keep GPS turned off, since the car has its own. It will be interesting to see how much battery life improves. Right now it's half drained after 11 hours even though the phone was "doing nothing" most of the day.

It will improve substantially would be my guess based on my experience.

Also, leave gps on. It had NO impact on my battery life.
