Re: [ROM][EPIC 4G][CM9] CM9: CyanogenMod v 9.0.0- RC2
Hey y'all. Just wanted to say thanks for the great ROM. It's made my EPIC 4G into a new phone! Also wondering if anyone else is having problems with the Amazon App Store with this ROM. I searched and couldn't find any mention of any problems, so I'm guessing it's a problem other than CM9 RC2 with the latest nightly build installed.

Re: [ROM][EPIC 4G][CM9] CM9: CyanogenMod v 9.0.0- RC2
This may not be news to others, but I just noticed that CM7 has a stable release for the Epic. I've been waiting for a stable CM9 release, but since CM7 has one now, I'm wondering if I should move to that. How hard/easy would it be to go from CM7 to CM9? Is a full wipe / hard reset required? If so, I may prefer to wait for CM9's stable release, which hopefully won't be *too* long since RCs are out. I assume I'd need to reset before going to CM7, so I'd rather not have to do that twice if I can avoid it. I don't really like dealing with hard resets; they're not horrible, but I still think they're a bit of a pain. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. I don't do that much with root/ROM and am mostly just trying to figure out how to keep my phone sharp until I upgrade it; the earliest I could do that is the fall, but I'm also considering holding out until the next Nexus is released, so I might want to hold on to my Epic for some time still. Thanks!

CM7 still has bugs. HD video recording skips being one of them. They just slapped stable on the package regardless.

Actually now that I think about it, just use this link [ROOT][CWM][GUIDE][GINGERBREAD] Rooting the Samsung Epic 4g You can just use Odin. You don't need to worry about a command prompt for this

But odin only works for pc right ? If I had a pc I would've been had this phone rooted lol

Does it? I actually though I remembered that it wasn't just windows based but maybe I'm wrong. Ok well never mind then. Back to the drawing board
Edit: I just remembered that when I did it, I was running windows inside virtual box...so no it doesn't work with straight Linux

Re: [ROM][EPIC 4G][CM9] CM9: CyanogenMod v 9.0.0- RC2
A stable release of CM9 just came out. That's basically what I was waiting for. It looks like it's an MTD build, which I think was required for ICS. I'm pretty sure that with my old MostlyStock ROM, I'm not on MTD right now. If I install CM9, would I be able to restore a nandroid backup of my current ROM successfully? Or will the change to MTD mess that up? And does anyone have advice on how to smoothly move to CM9 from an old Gingerbread ROM like mine? I'd prefer to lose as little data as possible, but I think a full wipe can't be avoided. So what's the best way to keep data or get it back as quickly/easily as possible? I don't do too much with root/ROM, so suggestions that will help me avoid problems or messing up my phone would definitely be appreciated. Thanks!

I finally rooted my phone it was so simple. I want to install cm9 or the most stable stock ics Rom that has with no bugs. Does cm9 has any bugs ? and i am about to use titanium back up i got the free version. Should i buy super user and get the paid version of titanium back up for free ?
Do i need Rom manager ?

Your backup will be fine switching between roms. The thing that effects the backups is changing recovery. Even then all you have to do its restore your backup, then flash your new recovery, and then redo the backup and flash the new rom. If you aren't changing recovery though that's really not necessary. Titanium backup is good to backup all your apps and app data. Go sms will take care of texts, and Google will backup contacts and passwords, etc. Just be sure not to restore system data. That causes problems when switching roms.

Re: [ROM][EPIC 4G][CM9] CM9: CyanogenMod v 9.0.0- RC2
I didn't intend to change the recovery on my phone, so it's good to know that I should be able to restore a backup from there successfully. I remember reading that once you go to MTD you have to be careful about installing a BML ROM later. I wasn't sure how that applied for nandroid backups. But if I can restore one of them without trouble, that's good to know. I can come back to my phone's current state then if I don't like a new ROM for some reason.
Right, I know Google handles some things basically automatically, and call logs and SMS records are easily restored with some apps. Apps themselves aren't so bad either; in the past, I've usually just reinstalled them all (or what I wanted to keep) from the market. It's the app data I'm wondering about. I think CWM has an advanced restore option for data only; would that be OK to use when changing ROMs? I have both Titanium Backup (free, right now) and MyBackup Root (free also) installed. Is either one better or easier for restoring backups? I haven't had to use either one for that yet. Thanks for your help.Titanium backup is good to backup all your apps and app data. In my opinion it's a lot easier to do the backup and restore with titanium a opposed to root backup or the file managers that have that function. Now keep in mind when I say data is a bad idea to restore, I'm talking about system data. App data is perfectly fine to restore. Titanium will back up the apps and data in one shot, and the restore is basically one click and wait. The advance restore option I believe is for system data. If you were going from one gb ROM to another that would probably be okay, but going from gb to ics, it is a strong possibility that it will cause problems.

Yea I did restore it from the old stock rom. So I should use sms back up to get my text back right?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Android Central Forums - 08-13-2012, 12:13 AM #545
Yeah little easier that way. Using advance restore through recovery doesn't separate app and system data...so I'd just go the other way to be safe. Just make sure you don't restore the stock app. You wanna just stick with the one that came with the new rom, or one from the market.

Thanks a lot. It works now. But there is one problem my phone doesn't auto rotate ? I went through the whole settings menu and made sure auto-rotate is on. It rotates when I slid the keyboard out but then when I slid it back in to portrait view it stays in landscape and I have to turn off the screen and back on to make it work. And is it safe to over clock to 1200mhz ?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Android Central Forums - 08-13-2012, 01:28 AM #547
Settings> display> rotation..make sure all the options are checked. 0, 90, 180, 270, and auto rotate. Overclock.... your phone will let you know. If you set it at 1200 and it starts acting stupid then kick it down to 1000. Some of these phones do fine that high and some don't. I personally have seen 800/1200 do fine. If that doesn't do well for you 400/1000 seems to do pretty well also.

I made sure everything about rotation is on I even put rotation delay to 10 Ms and it still don't work

Should I over clock the minimum CPU? Its at 100.

Not sure about the rotation then. I rooted an epic with this rom for a friend, but I didn't get to pay with it too much after. I would def overclock your min if the phone will behave. It'll save you some battery and the rom will perform much smoother
