Rooted, but now for the roms/kernels?

After rooting, I noticed the "unsigned" kernel was causing problems. Specifically, my buttons on the bottom of screen (home, menu, and search) were not working (back worked) and I had no service. No phone, wifi, 3g, 4g, nothing.

I tried several kernels i could find online, but none of them restored service to my phone, so I ended up flashing back the official samsung kernel.

I still have root, but now I'm nervous about playing with roms. Will the roms restore service or is that 100% dependent upon the kermel? can I install a new rom on top of the standard kernel? Is there a down side, assuming that works?

Anyone recommend a kernel / rom combination that will work on a US Sprint Galaxy s ii?

Thanks,
Pete, NYC

Midnight ROM and then flash the stock kernel, I haven't had any problems with that combination.
