what is the best rom and kernel combo to use on this phone?

Caulkulins Roms are really good and using the Rogue 1.3+ kernel gave me sometimes up to 2 days use without a charge depending on use. I was also over clocked to 1600. Right now I am on a Venum Rom VCS RL4 with the same kernel. Give these a try.

I'm on the same setup (Calkulins Rom with Rogue) Stable running overclocked to 1.6, 5300+ on quadrant, and still had awesome battery life.

Thanks for the input I decided to go with calkulins and flashed the android 4 ics theme
May flash the kernel later, over clicked to 1.4.
So far I got 14 hrs on heavy heavy use. The only thing I felt was missing was the stock integrated voice functions. Appreciate it.
