What does the icon in the extreme upper right corner of the home screen with the red circle and the number in it mean? Is it the number of unopened emails you have in total across all accounts? Also, what are those checkmarks that run across the very top of the screens? When I touch one nothing seems to happen. Thanks.

The top gray bar is your notifications bar, and you can "pull it down" like a nightshade to display its contents. The boxes with checkmarks are probably apps you have downloaded from the market, and the notifications bar is telling you they finished downloading and installed correctly. Once you "pull down" the bar, there should be an option to clear it. You can also get to your notifications by hitting the far left soft key, and selecting "Notifications"
